The joy of hills

Events happen

I was supposed to do an online business coaching session this evening and then found out tonight that it is running tomorrow instead.  My fault for not looking closely enough at the detail last week.  The change of event created opportunity.

I had rescheduled my training plan and got up at 0530 to do my one-hour bike session, and it was in the bag before I even had time to think about it. I now have this evening for other things.

Events not stories

It is always important not to make a story out of an event because it just becomes a problem! If we don’t make a story out of an event it doesn’t become a problem.

I have this conversation with myself whenever I am riding up long hills on the bike. Hills always become an event if I allow them to! My heart will tell me to take the easy route. My head will say take the hill, it is good for you. Both are reasonable options, and it is how I choose to show up at the bottom of the hill that makes all the difference.

Be a better you

Hills, like events in life, can be opportunities to stretch your body and your mind and overcome pockets of adversity.  They build resilience and develop focus and each one is a psychological and physical training event or an opportunity to be a better version of yourself.

As I continue to train for my IRONMAN Wales, and I am constantly having to face up to lots of ‘hills’ but I have made a promise to myself.  Each one is an opportunity to improve myself, a metaphor for life that bodes well at home and work too.
